Annotating with Hypothesis (MC2L)

Create your account

Please create a free hypothes.is account on the hypothes.is websitePLEASE CHOOSE A NICKNAME CONTAINING YOUR SURNAME so that I might give you points for your annotations.

Add Hypothes.is to your browser

You must then get your browser hypothes.is ready. I highly recommend that you use Chrome when you annotate with hypothes.is. Other browsers do not work as seamlessly with hypothes.is.

Install the Chrome extension

  1. Go to web.hypothes.is/start
  2. Click add-on for Chrome in Step 2. A window will pop up and prompt you to install the extension through the Chrome Store. If the window does not appear, try disabling your ad-blocker or enabling pop-ups.
  3. Pin the Hypothes.is icon to you toolbar.

Using other browsers (not recommended)

To use other browsers with Hypothes.is you have to install a bookmarklet. This is how you do it:

  1. Open the browser of your choice and go to web.hypothes.is/start/
  2. Under Step 2 on the right-hand side, you will see a button that says “Hypothes.is Bookmarklet.” Drag and drop the button to your bookmarks bar.
  3. To start annotating, visit any web page, open your Bookmarks toolbar, and click “Hypothes.is Bookmarklet.” The Hypothes.is sidebar will appear on the right part of your page.

Start annotating

  1. Navigate to the document you wish to annotate. Then, activate Hypothesis and open the sidebar.
  2. Click on the arrow facing down, in the upper left corner of the Hypothesis sidebar. A dropdown with all of your groups will appear.
  3. Click on the “Multiculturalism 2023” group. If not, every annotation made will be visible to the public and not to your tutor and other group members.

Annotate text

Highlight the text you want to annotate. You will see an option to annotate or highlight pop up. If you click on the option annotate, the hypothesis sidebar will appear, and you will be able to comment. In addition, you will see an option to “Post to Multiculturalism 2023” and “only me.” Please Select “Multiculturalism 2023” so that other group members and your tutor will be able to see and reply to your annotations.
Use the toolbar above your note to format text when creating an annotation. Use Preview to see how your note will look before you post.

Annotate an image and/or a video or make a general comment

To annotate an image or video, or to make a general comment on the document, you have to use the note function, available in the sidebar. Page notes allow you to make more general annotations unrelated to specific highlights on the page. You can click on the post-it icon on the left of the sidebar. You will be able to comment and choose who is allowed to see your note (the group or only you). Please select Multiculturalism 2023.

You can come back at any time to edit or delete your own highlights, annotations, replies, or page notes.

What kinds of things am I expected to annotate?

  • Those things you find particularly interesting or surprising. Say why in your annotations.
  • Those things you find questionable or that you disagree with. Say why in your annotations.
  • Ask questions about those things you do not understand. Be as specific as possible in what you ask and try to suggest possible answers to your own questions, no matter how unsure you may be about them. Giving tentative answers to a question is a very important first step in academic work.
  • Respond and react to other students’ annotations.
  • Always wrap up your annotation work by making a general comment about the paper (using page notes in Hypothes.is), summing up what it represents in your eyes and summing up how you interpret and view it.

Whenever you annotate, you should try to go beyond gut reactions to things you like or do not like and offer your reflections on the author’s stance, message, motivation and goals.
